This is absolutely how fascists speak. They invoke God. They invoke national security. They invoke cultural nationalism. If Modi is selected by 'God' then why we need 'elections'? Perhaps, we can make him Maharaja of India. achhe din aane wale hain..
God has chosen me, bless me: Narendra Modi
"God chooses certain people to do the difficult work. I believe god has chosen me for this work. Now I only need your blessings," Modi said in a 3D address telecast across the country.
NEW DELHI: BJP's PM candidate Narendra Modi on Wednesday sought support for his prime ministerial bid, saying he has been chosen by god to rescue the country from the mess created by UPA and he needed people's blessings for accomplishing the difficult task.
"God chooses certain people to do the difficult work. I believe god has chosen me for this work. Now I only need your blessings," Modi said in a 3D address telecast across the country a day before he is scheduled to file his nomination from the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat.
The pitch of Modi, who rattled off statistics to argue that the country was in dire straits after a decade of UPA's misrule, was directed specifically at fence-sitters, voters who have not yet made up their mind.
Modi said it was no more a matter of debate as to who was winning this election. "The polls on 232 seats have already decided who is forming the next government. That UPA is losing miserably is a foregone conclusion. So why not vote for a stable government. I urge all of you, especially the fence-sitters, to vote in record numbers,"he said.
The Gujarat chief minister said only a stable government would ensure robust development and so people should ensure BJP gets 300 seats. "A jod-tod (coalition) government, as that of the UPA, which has brazenly used the CBI sword to keep itself in majority, gets occupied in saving its own chair. How will such a government work for the country? Give such a mandate that we can lay the foundation for the next century of development," Modi said.
He attacked Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi for indulging in "poverty tourism" but caring little for the poor. "Congress says poverty is a state of mind. Rahul bhaiya goes for poverty tourism. He goes to villages and meets the poor to see if they have two legs, two hands, two eyes and a stomach. That's because he has himself never experienced poverty," Modi said.
He added that even according to government statistics, the top five states in poverty alleviation were those ruled by the BJP. "I met the PM sometime ago and talked about the 20-point programme of the government for poverty alleviation. Its quarterly report had held that BJP states were best performing. But instead of asking states under Congress rule to do better, the government stopped publishing the report itself," he said.
Announcing that he was going to file his nomination from Varanasi on Thursday, Modi said his prime focus in the holy city would be cleanliness. "Among several things, Mahatma Gandhi loved cleanliness. We have to work towards bringing ourselves to international level in this filed. We have to stress on cleanliness. I will make Varanasi one of the cleanest cities in the country. I did that to Surat, which had been ravaged by plague due to lack of cleanliness," he said.
