Dalit Youth Found Dead with Stab Injuries on Riverbed

A 21-year-old Dalit youth was on Sunday found murdered in Ponnai riverbed near Anaicut villagefalling under Ponnai police station jurisdiction. Five youth were picked for inquiry in connection with the murder.

The deceased was identified as Prasanth, son of Venkatesan and a resident of Mettu Colony in Nanthavadi village in Arakkonam Taluk. The body had two stab injuries on the chest and front of the neck. Empty liquor bottles  were found at the murder scene, the police said.

Ruling out the possibility of a planned murder, a police officer attached to the forensic wing surmised that the murder might have taken place due to a sudden provocation under the influence of alcohol. The empty liquor bottles suggested that the deceased and his friends would have argued over an issue, resulting in the death of Prasanth. The murderers had used a sharp weapon and stabbed him, killing him instantly, said the officer.

Police from the forensic wing lifted fingerprints from the scene. “The victim had come to a church festival along with his friends. The murder took place during the late hours of Saturday despite the place being crowded,” police said.  A case was registered. Prasanth’s body was sent to the GH  for a postmortem.

Man, Lover End life
A 32-year-old man and his paramour allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison in Katchinaickanpatti village in Kandhili police station limit, after their families dissuaded them to snap their illegal relationship.

They were found dead on the outskirt of Katchinaickanpatti villageon Sunday morning. The police attached to Kandhili station reached the spot and recovered the bodies and sent them for post mortem to the GH in Tirupattur.

The preliminary inquiry divulged that Jagadesan, father of two childern, and Indira, mother of a child, were working in a brick kiln. They developed an extra marital relationship six months ago and their family members had warned them against their relationship.

They might have decided to end their lives after their family members opposed their relationship vehemently, said the police.

Bail for men accused of raping dalit woman

KOCHI: The high court of Kerala has granted bail to two men, who were accused of raping a woman after the police reported that the alleged victim has been suffering from schizophrenia. The woman had later accused two others of violating her, the police said.

Justice N K Balakrishnan granted bail to Kakkadampoyil, Kozhikode natives Roy T M (33) and Anil C S (19).

The woman, belonging to a scheduled caste, complained to police on April 5, 2013, that the duo trespassed into her house and raped her on two-three occasions.

Advocate S Nirmal, who appeared for the accused, submitted that the woman was mentally ill and had been inconsistent in her statement.

Following a petition by Roy and his advocate's argument, the high court sought a report from the sub-inspector of Thiruvambady police station. The officer reported that the woman has been under treatment for schizophrenia, and lacked normal intelligence.

The police also stated that the woman had retracted her initial statement and named two others as her alleged tormentors.

The petitioners' counsel submitted that as the accused were booked under Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes ( Prevention of Atrocities) Act and rape, it was not possible to get bail from the magistrate or sessions court.

Granting bail to the duo, the court, referring to the police report, held that the complainant was not consistent regarding those who had raped her. The court also expressed doubt whether she had been really raped or if it was just some sort of hallucination.

The accused were granted bail on conditions of executing a bond of Rs 25,000 each with two solvent sureties. They were also ordered to surrender their passports.

India Celebrates Ambedkar Jayanti

On Monday,India celebrates Ambedkar Jayanti.

The April 14 public holiday marks the birthday of Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, the man who framed India’s constitution. A lawyer, he also served as the country’s first law minister after independence.

Mr. Ambedkar is remembered most for fighting to improve the social position of the Dalits, a group traditionally considered untouchable in the Indian caste system. He became an icon for the Dalit community. A few months before his death in 1956, Mr. Ambedkar converted to Buddhism. This inspired many Dalits to convert as well.

On this day, statues of Mr. Ambedkar across India are showered with flowers and garlanded.

In 2011, Kumari Mayawati, then the chief minister of India’s most populous state, Uttar Pradesh, unveiled a 6.85 billion-rupee ($139 million) Dalit park featuring a bronze statue of Mr. Ambedkar. The park is spread across 33 acres of land in a New Delhi suburb.

Ms. Mayawati, a Dalit who is the leader of the Bahujan Samaj Party, said at the time of the inauguration that the park was created to honor the efforts of Dalit leaders, including Mr. Ambedkar.
