The US will 'find' them.] 15 Apr 2014 More than 2,300 tubes containing samples of the potentially deadly SARS virus have gone "missing" from a high-security laboratory at the Pasteur Institute in Paris. The research body insists there is no cause for alarm as the samples have "no infectious potential", but it has filed a complaint against "persons unknown" in an attempt to resolve the mysterious disappearance. During a recent inventory, researchers at the Pasteur Institute discovered they had lost some 2,349 vials containing samples of the SARS virus.
 
NATO to deploy warships, undecided on possible deployment of troops in Eastern Europe 16 Apr 2014 NATO is strengthening its military presence in the Baltic and Mediterranean due to the escalation of the Ukrainian crisis. The organization is to deploy ships and intensified aerial patrols in the region. At a meeting of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council in Brussels, NATO approved a number of measures to strengthen security in Eastern Europe in connection with the growing crisis in Ukraine. "Our defense plans will be revised and strengthened," said Anders Rasmussen, Secretary General of NATO, to press in Brussels. He added that NATO had not yet reached a decision about the possible deployment of troops in Eastern Europe.

3 dead, 13 injured as anti-govt protesters rally near Ukrainian military base - Interior Ministry 17 Apr 2014 Three people were killed and thirteen others injured by gunfire in a confrontation between anti-government protesters and soldiers stationed at a military base in the Ukrainian city of Mariupol, Interior Minister Arsen Avakov says. Avakov wrote on his Fbook page that three of the anti-government activists that clashed with soldiers at the base had been killed, referring to them as "armed militants." A group of several dozen protesters arrived at the base, located in the turbulent Donetsk region, on Wednesday evening.
 
Military seize airfield controlled by anti-govt activists in eastern Ukraine 15 Apr 2014 Ukrainian troops have seized an airfield in the city of Kramatorsk as part of a security operation against anti-government activists in the eastern part of the country. Activists claimed several people were wounded. Coup-imposed President Aleksandr Turchinov said that he received a telephone call confirming that the military has seized the airfield in Kramatorsk.
 
Kiev military op in eastern Ukraine 15 Apr 2014 Kiev authorities have started a military operation against anti-government protesters in eastern Ukraine. Conflicting reports of casualties emerged after troops, with air and armored vehicle support, stormed areas occupied by the activists. 19:54 GMT: Residents of the eastern Ukrainian city of Lugansk have stopped a convoy of armored vehicles of the Ukrainian army approaching the city, local channel Inter reported.
 
US airstrike kills woman, two children in E. Afghanistan 15 Apr 2014 Local Afghan officials say at least three civilians-- including a woman and two children -- have been killed in a US-led airstrike in the country's troubled east. A spokesman for the governor of Afghanistan's southeastern Khost province said the incident took place in the Zani Kheil area on Monday night. The official added that ahelicopter belonging to US-led foreign forces opened fire on a house during a training mission.
 
MH370: Mini-Sub Begins Second Wreckage Search 16 Apr 2014 A mini-submarine tasked with finding wreckage from the missing Malaysia Airlines plane has begun its second search mission in the depths of the southern Indian Ocean. Data from the US Navy's Bluefin-21's first descent on Monday has been analysed, and no sign of flight MH370 has been found.
 
NORAD to conduct exercise flights over Marion, OH area Thursday --Military or military contracted aircraft to be playing role of 'aircraft of interest' 16 Apr 2014 North American Aerospace Defense Command will practice intercept and identification procedures over northern Ohio between noon and 2 p.m. Thursday. The flights are scheduled to take place between Marion and Toledo. People in this area may hear and/or see NORAD-controlled fighter jets in close proximity to a military or military contracted aircraft, which will be playing the role of "aircraft of interest." To test responses, systems and equipment, NORAD regularly conducts exercises with a variety of scenarios, including airspace restriction violations, hijackings and responding to unknown aircraft [except on 9/11, when Dick Cheney ordered NORAD to 'stand down'].
 
NORAD training over the skies of Washington this week 14 Apr 2014 The North American Aerospace Defense Command plans to conduct training exercises over the Washington area early this week. Training is scheduled for overnight until 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, and again Tuesday night into Wednesdaymorning. The training will involve Civil Air Patrol aircraft, Air Force F-16s and a U.S. Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter.

He has been sent to Bridgewater State Hospital for psychiatric evaluation, is being held on 100,000 bail, and is due back in court May 7.
 
Man charged with hoax near marathon finish line 15 Apr 2014 A man taken into custody near the Boston Marathon finish line late Tuesday, the anniversary of the deadly pressure cooker bombings, had a rice cooker in his backpack and was being charged with possession of a hoax device, police said. The man was stopped by an officer who saw him acting suspiciously, including walking down the middle of a street barefoot in pouring rain, Police Superintendent Randall Halstead said. The man dropped the backpack and told the officer it contained a rice cooker, he said.
 
Person in custody after suspicious bags found at marathon finish line 15 Apr 2014 A person is in custody tonight after police report suspicious bags were found at the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Boylston Street. An eye-witness told the Herald tonight a man dressed all in black and wearing a black veil walked down the middle of Boylston Street, with a backpack on his back, chanting "Boston strong, Boston strong." The bomb squad is now on the scene and police have pushed everyone back. A bomb squad member yelled "fire in the hole" as they did a detonation.

Stephen Davis, a spokesman for the NYPD, confirmed that detectives assigned to the unit had been transferred to other duties within the department's intelligence division. The NYPD's demographics unit assembled databases on where Muslims lived, shopped, worked and prayed. Plainclothes officers infiltrated Muslim student groups, put informants in mosques, monitored sermons and catalogued Muslims in New York who adopted Americanised surnames.

Ruppert -- best known as an investigative journalist and peak oil awareness advocate -- is dead. While details are sketchy, various sources and his Facebook page say that he committed suicide. He was 63 years old.
 
Russia will not import GMO products, will grow organic food - PM Medvedev 07 Apr 2014 Russia will not import GMO products, the country's Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said, adding that the nation has enough space and resources to produce organic food. Moscow has no reason to encourage the production of genetically modified products or import them into the country, Medvedev told a congress of deputies from rural settlements on Saturday. "If the Americans like to eat GMO products, let them eat it then. We don't need to do that; we have enough space and opportunities to produce organic food," he said.
 
More subpoenas from Bridgegate committee likely; committee hasn't ruled out calling Christie 16 Apr 2014 Assemblyman John Wisniewski, the co-chair of the legislative panel investigating the George Washington Bridge scandal, said the committee will likely begin calling witnesses to testify as early as next month and hasn't ruled out calling the governor, Chris Christie (R). Americans increasingly prefer Democrats on healthcare: poll 15 Apr 2014 Americans increasingly think Democrats have a better plan for healthcare than Republicans, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted after the White House announced that more people than expected had signed up for the "Obamacare" health plan. Nearly one-third of respondents in the online survey released on Tuesday said they prefer Democrats' plan, policy or approach to healthcare, compared to just 18 percent for Republicans. This marks both an uptick in support for Democrats and a slide for Republicans since a similar poll in February.
