Fukushima No. 1 boss admits radioactive water problems out of control --Abe [lied and] told an Olympic Committee meet situation was under control 20 Apr 2014 The manager of the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant admits to embarrassment that repeated efforts have failed to bring under control the problem of radioactive water, eight months after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told the world the matter had been resolved. Tokyo Electric Power Co., the plant's operator, has been fighting a daily battle against contaminated radioactive water since Fukushima was wrecked in March 2011. "It's embarrassing to admit, but there are certain parts of the site where we don't have full control," Akira Ono told reporters touring the plant last week.

1.1 Tons of Radioactive Water Overflows Waste Container at Fukushima Plant 16 Apr 2014 Around 1.1 tons of radioactive water overflowed Wednesdayfrom a container during cleansing of a water treatment system at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power complex, plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. said. The water did not leak outside due to a barrier and remained inside the building housing the so-called Advanced Liquid Processing System, a facility that has been in trial operation since March last year. The water contained around 3.8 million becquerels per liter of beta radiation emitting radioactive materials such as strontium-90.

Confidential U.S. assessments show Afghanistan not ready to govern on own --State Department tries to hide risks of corruption 15 Apr 2014 Confidential U.S. assessments, which the State Department tried to hide from the public, show nearly all Afghan Cabinet ministries are woefully ill-prepared to govern after the U.S. withdraws its troops, often describing the gaps in knowledge, capability and safeguards as "critical" and describing an infrastructure in danger of collapsing if left to its own accord. Pentagon-sponsored study opens door for super lasers, weather control 19 Apr 2014 Pentagon-sponsored researchers have made the reach of an intensive laser beam longer by an order of magnitude. Researchers say their discovery can be used to seed rain and trigger lightning, but the potential scope of applications is much larger. A short intensive laser pulse produces plasma in its path. This plasma can interact with charged particles in a storm cloud and change weather, starting rain on request and control lightning bolts.

DARPA producing sea-floor pods that can release attack drones on command 19 Apr 2014 The Pentagon's research arm, DARPA, is developing robot pods that can sit at the bottom of the ocean for long stretches of time, waiting to release airborne and water-based drones to the surface upon an attack command. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) recently called for bids to complete the final two phases of its Upward Falling Payloads (UFP) program. The UFPs would come equipped with electronic and low-power laser attack capabilities, surveillance sensors, and airborne and aquatic drones that would have the ability to act as decoys or offer intelligence and targeting data, Ars Technica reported.
