MEMORIES of DARK DAYS : Painting Exhibition and Seminar to mark the imposition of the Emergency, 26 June, 12 pm
Warmly,
Dear Friends,
Cinema of Resistance, in collaboration with People's Art Group of the Jan Sanskriti Manch, invites you to MEMORIES of DARK DAYS, a programme to mark the 40th year of imposition of the Emergency in India.
MEMORIES of DARK DAYS is an open exhibition of twelve original paintings, which were made during the 1980s, by eminent Delhi-based painter Ashok Bhowmick, based on his memories of having lived through the Emergency days. The paintings, holding immense archival value as artistic documents of a dark period of Indian democracy, will be on display in front of the World View Arena, on Jadavpur University campus. The artist will be present for interaction. The exhibition will be inaugurated at 12 pm.
Ashok da will also present a seminar titled PROGRESSIVE TRENDS in INDIAN ART at 2 pm on the same day. Through an audio-visual presentation, the speaker will walk us through historic journeys of people's artists of India beginning from the 1940s. He will acquaint us with the legendary Chittoprasad, Zainul Abedin, Somnath Hore, Debabrata Mukhopadhyay, Ramkinkar Baij et al, who used the form and medium of art to depict people's sufferings, structural violence (like the man-made famine of 1943), militant peasant rebellions that shaped the history of India. The speaker will reflect on how and why these artists are fading from popular memory and why we must embrace them again. He will also dwell on the contemporary scenario of art and its practitioners.
No tickets/passes are required. The event is free and open to all!
