Marry first, jail can wait: Cops to man who burnt 65-year-old

Ankit Yadav,TNN | Jun 20, 2014, 10.59 PM IST

BAREILLY: Udai Veer, the main accused in the burning of the 65-year-old Dalit man two days ago, was to get married on Thursday. Police in Bareilly allowed the man to go ahead with his marriage, providing him reprieve for a day before sending him to jail.

The family of the 65-year-old who died of the burns, however, are hard-pressed to understand the kindness shown to the accused. Local people have also protested the police action.

Sixty-five-year-old Genda Lal, a Dalit farmer, was set ablaze by the three men on a motorbike Wednesday night, after a heated argument in Chandpura village under Aonla tehsil.

Sources said Udai Veer was at home in Sirauli village of Aonla tehsil on Thursday when the police raided his house. Police were surprised to find the man's family busy preparing for his marriage, scheduled for Thursday night.

The man's family reportedly pleaded with the policemen to spare him for a day, so the marriage ceremony could take place. They said the police could take him into custody after the ceremony.

The policemen, sources said, acceded to the requests, and returned without arresting the man. This created a furore in the village, with members of the victim's family questioning the partisan nature of police action.

The victim's daughter, Somvati, expressed shock of the police action.

The others accused in the case, however, were not as lucky. Makhan, who was among the accused, was picked up by police immediately as information was received that he was in the village.

Aonla circle officer Kushal Pal Singh told Times of India: "We have arrested one of the accused. Two others are on the run. All allegations of allowing Udai Veer a day's time to tie the nuptial knot is false and baseless. He was not present at his home at the time of the raid."

Sensing trouble after seeing the sharp reaction of local people, the police registered a complaint on Thursday against the three under provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Act, 1989.

Twice in two years, tea stall owner’s two sons crack IIT

Written by Anju Agnihotri | Jalandhar | June 21, 2014 10:18 am

Amit and Sumit, sons of a tea-stall owner here, have cleared the JEE for the second time. Amit’s rank is 2,014 and Sumit’s 809. Last year, their poverty came in the way of their admission to IIT. There is fear that it may happen again this year.

“Sumit was allotted civil engineering at IIT Roorkee, I was allotted architecture in IIT Khargapur, but we could not arrange the fee,” said Amit, the elder of the two.

Their father Jitender Kumar, who runs a tea stall at Laddewali railway crossing, said, “I tried to borrow money, but the interest was too much. So, I asked my sons to try next year. But unfortunately, I met with an accident just 15 days before the exam this year and whatever we had saved was spent on my treatment.”

“In fact, my sons had to run the stall for days just before the exam at the cost of their studies,” said their mother, Manju Devi.

The parents, who come from the Sitamarhi district of Bihar, belong to a scheduled caste community. Neither had passed even high school, but they are keen on their sons studying and doing well.

Ever since the IIT result was declared on Thursday, the family is worried instead of celebrating. The two brothers need Rs 40,000 each immediately. The total fee of the entire course is Rs 3 lakh for each, apart from other expenses.

On Friday, there was some hope when Punjab’s Education Minister, Daljeet Singh Cheema, said he would arrange financial help. Cheema met them at Circuit House and said he was proud of them.

In fact, the boys did not know about IITs or JEE till class XI. They got to know from their friends, appeared in JEE, and cracked it in the very first attempt in 2013, without any outside help. Sumit’s rank was 1,800 and Amit’s 1,600.

“We wanted to study in an English medium school, but in our schools (both studied in government schools), no teacher was available to teach us in English. So, we bought the books of our subjects in both English and Hindi. By studying from both books and comparing, we learned English,” said Amit.

Amit studied at Doaba Khalsa School and Sumit at Laddowali Government Model Senior Secondary School. Last year, Amit scored 86 per cent and Sumit 87.8 per cent at the senior secondary level.

Moved by their story and impressed by “their enthusiasm”, Ranjan Pathak, director of Victory Classes, a coaching institute, provided them free coaching and guidance this time. Sumit said that their school teachers had also helped them a lot.

Take back unused lands: Telangana CM K Chandrasekhar Rao

DC CORRESPONDENT | June 21, 2014, 03.06 am IST

Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao has decided to set up a ‘Special Chasing Cell’ in his office to expedite approvals with ‘zero corruption’ in the upcoming projects and to ensure that there is no political or bureaucratic harassment to potential investors.

He asked officials to take back land that were allotted to various projects by previous governments and lying unused or not being used for the purpose that was intended for.

The special cell will be attached to the CMO and will work as a ‘single window clearance system’ for potential investors.

Mr Rao discussed the modalities of the special cell during a review meeting he held with officials of the industry department at the Secretariat on Friday.

Mr Rao asked officials to identify lands, which are not useful for agriculture and allot them for setting up industries. This would help agriculture and maintain the way of life said the Chief Minister. He asked officials to rename APIIC as TPIIC.

Mr Rao suggested that the industrial policy should aim at encouraging women entrepreneurs belonging to SC, ST, BC and Minorities. In Warangal and Siricilla, he said, textile parks are to be set up. Land belonging to Ajamzahi mills has to be utilised for development of the textile park.

He said, the Telangana Textile Park should be developed along the lines of Tirupur in Tamil Nadu.

Lawyers' body seeks more judges from SC, ST, women, Muslims

Press Trust of India  |  Mumbai
June 20, 2014 Last Updated at 18:59 IST

Bombay Lawyers' Association today urged President Pranab Mukherjee to take initiative in "creating a moral force in favour of appointing" more persons from among the scheduled castesscheduled tribes, Muslims and the women to the higher judiciary.

Scheduled castes and tribes, Muslims and women have received hardly any representation in the higher judiciary even after 65 years of independence, said Ahmed Abidi, president of BLA, in a letter to the President.

Abidi pointed out that recently the Supreme Court had lamented that some sections of the society were not represented at all in High Courts and the apex court.

The letter alleged that absence of representation for large sections of people in the higher judiciary was not a matter of accident but of "deliberate design and policy".

"Higher judiciary has held, despite the mandate of our Constitution, that reservations will not apply to it. Had reservations been in force, as they are in all other fields of national activity, we would have created a pool of competent persons from among disadvantaged groups," it said.

Sunil Kumar Releases '1 Master 99 Slaves'

June 20  6:59 2014
Having been treated negatively since his school days up to the time he had finally landed a job, author Sunil Kumar took to heart to study the Indian society, religion, secrets of Vedas, Ramayana, and Vastu-Shastra and unearth the reason why his fellow country men behave that way toward each other including backward classes (SC/ST/OBC) hampering even others. As a result of his backed with his experiences, he discovered a society with "1 Master 99 Slaves" (published by Xlibris AU).

Kumar believes that, "If something is an illusion, you can describe it if and only if you have escaped from that illusion. The person who himself is still a part of the illusion cannot describe it." Fed up by the unequal treatment of the people due to India's caste system, Kumar deems it is time to step up and inform the rest of India that equality is much needed in their country.

Containing manuscripts written since ancient days of how Indian people are treated, Kumar's story seeks to open eyes of readers, locally and internationally, that inhumane behaviors will never pave the way for equality in a country. Citing the conditions native men and women of India endured for 2500 years, Kumar wants readers to realize that they can only safeguard their country from such plight if they ensure that they avoid a society with "1 Master 99 Slaves."
