The Threat of GMOs - Global March Against Monsanto

The Threat of GMOs - Global March Against Monsanto

Global Research NewsMay 23, 2014
The debate on genetically modified foods is making a powerful statement this weekend, with the "March Against Monsanto" being planned on Saturday, May 24, in over 50 countries across the globe. Today more than ever, the world's food resources are being hijacked by giant corporations that are turning farms into factories and replacing natural resources with genetically modified "food-like" substances.

In the bestselling book, "Seeds of Destruction: The Hidden Agenda of Genetic Manipulation", author F. William Engdahl takes the reader inside the corridors of power, into the backrooms of the science labs, behind closed doors in the corporate boardrooms.

On May 24, millions of activists from around the world will once again March Against Monsanto, calling for the permanent boycott of Genetically Modified Organism (GMOs) and other harmful agro-chemicals. Currently, marches will occur on six continents, in 52 countries, with events in over 400 cities. A comprehensive list of marches can be accessed at www.march-against-monsanto.com.

GMOs are not adequately monitored to ensure public safety. Long term, independent, peer reviewed studies were not conducted before GMOs were introduced for human or animal consumption. In the USA, the revolving door between Monsanto employees, government positions, and regulatory authorities has led to key Monsanto figures occupying positions of power at the FDA and EPA. Monsanto has spent hundreds of millions of dollars to obstruct all labeling attempts; they also suppress any research containing results not in their favor.

British Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Secretary Owen Paterson is a staunch supporter of the GM sector. Both he and other officials like the EU's chief science advisor Anne Glover have been more than happy to act as mouthpieces for the GM sector by making false statements and claims about the benefits and safety of GMOs that fly in the face of scientific findings.

Emails between civil servants and the GM industry reveal how the two developed a media strategy to convince the public about the merits of GM food. Writing on the Mail Online website, Sean Poulter notes that the email contacts were part of a wider strategy designed to relax European regulations on growing GM crops and spend millions of taxpayers' money on GM research in British fields. Owen Paterson has pushed for faster approval of new crops and lobbying for public support and has lobbied the EU to allow biotech crops to be planted in Britain even if they are banned elsewhere.

Monsanto's talk of 'technology' tries to hide its real objectives of control over seed where genetic engineering is a means to control seed. "Monsanto is an agricultural company. We apply innovation and technology to help farmers around the world produce more while conserving more. Producing more, Conserving more, Improving farmers lives."

These are the promises Monsanto India's website makes, alongside pictures of smiling, prosperous farmers from the state of Maharashtra. This is a desperate attempt by Monsanto and its PR machinery to delink the epidemic of farmers' suicides in India from the company's growing control over cotton seed supply - 95 per cent of India's cotton seed is now controlled by Monsanto.

Genetically Modified Crops, Monsanto's Roundup and the Contamination of America's Food Chain - Rady Ananda

On June 21, [2010] the US Supreme Court released its long awaited decision on the first case involving genetically modified crops, allowing the USDA to impose a partial deregulation, should it so choose. This would permit the sale of Monsanto's Roundup Ready alfalfa (RRA).

GMOs are created to tolerate or produce pesticide. North America is losing its natural pollinators, specifically bees, butterflies and bats, because of the enormous tonnage of chemicals sprayed in this nation. If we lose our bees, said Einstein, humans will last about six years. We need our pollinators. The entire web of life depends on them.

Those pesticide chemicals have poisoned all of our waters, damaging the biota, or making seafood toxic for humans. Chemical companies like Monsanto, Dow, Bayer, etc. created GMOs so they could sell chemicals. Those chemicals are bad for the environment and for humans.
GMO and Morgellons DiseaseBarbara H. Peterson

Since the Clinton administration made biotechnology "a strategic priority for U.S. government backing", giant transnational agri-business concerns have aggressively taken over the global food chain by flooding it with Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) without regard for the consequences to the earth or its inhabitants. This takeover not only has the potential for global economic devastation, but threatens the earth's population with far-reaching health concerns as well. One health concern that seems to coincide with the GMO revolution is Morgellons disease. What if the advent of Morgellons disease has something to do with the ingestion of GMO foods?

Little information has been revealed concerning the long-term health effects of GMO crops on humans or animals, and even less information can be had regarding research correlating Morgellons with GMO foods. Could it be that companies such as Monsanto have enough clout to effectively squash these stories?
