Anand Patwardhan For those who still do not believe that the Indian media is fully sold out to corporates, who in turn are generally hell bent on foisting their darling Modi upon us all, here is what happened to me yesterday.

For those who still do not believe that the Indian media is fully sold out to corporates, who in turn are generally hell bent on foisting their darling Modi upon us all, here is what happened to me yesterday.
I got a call from the Times of India asking my opinion about its “ManifestoTOI” which was on the cover yesterday. I told the reporter that I had not read it as I generally skip ads and go straight to the news. She asked me to read it and then she would call back to get my quote in 15 minutes.
What I read immediately alerted me to the fact that this was nothing but a clever presentation of the neo-liberal agenda, which combines extreme right wing economics with a few crumbs to be thrown at those who believe in individual freedoms. So while it advocates tax cuts for the rich, eases land acquisition norms for industry, promotes privatization and foreign direct investment, promotes indirect taxation (which shifts the tax burden to the poor) it also throws a few crumbs to those of us who fight for civil liberties by calling for a reform of Article 377, removing the male bias in the law on adultery, and taking a relook at the laws on sedition.
When the reporter called me back for my response I asked her if a strong critique of the TOI manifesto would be carried by the TOI. What I heard on the other end was some nervous laughter and then “May I check with my seniors and call you back?” She never did.
This morning’s TOI carries rave reviews of its manifesto from across all shades of the political spectrum. But look closer at the quotes. Only the non-critical bits spoken have been carried. Did Kavita Krishnan or Prashant Bhushan say nothing against privatization or land grabbing or were they censored? I certainly was.

  • Ps Mukherjee This board has been infected by Post-modern idealists with the same old 'Garble philosophy'' ( word chosen by Naom Chomsky against those Post-Modernists). Without knowing a dint about Stalin,Mao,Che ,Cuba these post-modernists are deliberately using dissents ! Have they read the recent book "Khrushchev lied" by Grover Furr? are they aware about what is the current role of Camellia Vilajo in Chele ? or so to say , what is "ALBA"'s role in Latin America ? Someone has mentioned about Scandinavian kind of system ! Then he should also keep the statistics of upsurge suicidal rates in those countries out of "alienation" ( as Marx conceptualized). Is he aware of resurfacing of Pro-Nazis in those countries? Is he aware about 2011 Mass killing in Norway by Andres Behring Breivik ? List is long ..Marx and Leftism are still very much relevant, even in 2014..

  • Ameet Singh really, how does marx explain a battle for a surplus that never existed, millions slaughtered so that resources could be distributed amongst the favourites that survived, how does marx explain a phenomenon like facebook or google which manufacture precisely NOTHING and yet command values worth billions of Dollars, how does marx explain compassion or altruism or benevolence on the part of the worlds richest capitalists who have all but given away everything they possess for the betterment of the world right from the rockefellers to the bill and melinda gates & buffet foundations...

i cant explain away everything, and i do not think we have a perfect system, whether its the monetisation or commoditisation or deification of life the way we know it, we certainly are not perfect. but we are the only solution that has worked so far, no collectivist philosophy including marx's has been able to stand that test or temerity. all have failed, the USSR is no more, china has sold out and north korea is not a paradigm of virtue.

wake up and smell the coffee...
  • Vinod Mubayi Almost every national English daily newspaper in India seems to have become a Modi campaign outlet, even the Hindu, which sports a slideshow of Modi campaigning all over the country in its online edition. The TOI "manisfesto" mentioned by Anand doesn'tsurprise me at all. Rightwing, groupthink economic philosophy is being assiduously promoted by the big corporates that own the media, it is no wonder their candidate is ahead in the polls!
