Accused in Dalit massacre arrested in Bihar

Patna: An accused in the 2000 massacre of 34 Dalits in Bihar was arrested Friday from a school in the state, police said.

Nanbutan Sharma, accused in the massacre that took place in Aurangabad district's Miyapur village, was arrested by the police in Arwal district, about 100 km from here, police official Pankaj said.

The accused was arrested following a tip off to police that he had changed his name to Amrendra Sharma and was working as a contractual teacher in a school, Pankaj said.

Sharma, a member of the outlawed Ranvir Sena, was absconding since the massacre.

Ranvir Sena was the private militia of Bihar landlords.

According to the first information report in the case, 34 Dalits, including nine children and 13 women, were killed and more than 15 others injured by activists of Ranvir Sena.

TP Murder: CPM Faces a 'Caste Question'

If everyone in the CPM, including V S Achuthanandan, was seemingly happy with the findings of the party inquiry commission into the T P Chandrasekharan murder, a dalit organisation here has a serious question to raise at the party leadership. How come the party inquiry ended up finding a dalit as the lonely culprit responsible for the cold-blooded murder, it asks. The Kerala State Pattika Jana Samajam (KPJS) demands that the CPM explain why the whole responsibility of T P Chandrasekharan murder landed up on the shoulders of a poor dalit party worker.

“We are not questioning the police investigation or the court verdict that found the guilty in the case. We don’t argue that the lone accused in the party inquiry report is innocent,” said Thekkan Sunil Kumar, general secretary of the KPJS. “It is very evident that the poor man alone cannot arrange the lakhs of money to assign a quotation team for the crime,” he stated. “It was intriguing still that he happened to be the lone culprit before the party leadership. The party put all the blame on him and washed its hands off all the responsibility. It shows the deep-rooted caste prejudices still entrenched in the mainstream parties including the CPM,” the organisation alleged. It also observed that parties often used the dalits as tools.

“It was saddening that political parties often take the role of either the perpetrator or their guardian angels, ultimately making it difficult for the poor communities,” the KPJS noted.

HC to continue hearing of Tsunduru case

The Division Bench of the AP High Court comprising Justice L. Narasimha Reddy and Justice M.S.K. Jaiswal on Friday made it clear that it would continue to adjudicate the criminal appeals pertaining to the Tsunduru Dalit killings.

Rejecting the plea made by Special Public Prosecutor not to hear the case furtheron Friday, the Bench said that notices would be issued to Special Public Prosecutors and J. Moses, who filed an affidavit regarding the change of Bench, for further action. On Friday, the High Court Bench held that the arguments on the cases would be heard on March 25 (Tuesday). The Bench said it was not proper for the Special Public Prosecutors to be approached by the victims. The Bench found that both the Special Prosecutors and Jalladi Moses, president of the Tsunduru Dalitha Badhitula Porata Committee, obstructed process of law and functioning of court.

Show-cause notice
The Bench also directed the registry to issue show-cause notices to these three to explain as to why further proceedings, as suggested by the Additional Attorney General, be not initiated against them.
