70-year-old man arrested for sexually abusing minor girls in school

KATHGODAM: Police in Uttarakhand have arrested a 70-year-old man for sexually abusing six to nine-year-old girls at a residential school run by him in Pithoragarh.

Almost a dozen girls believed to from classes I, II and III at the co-education Himalayan Public School established by Chandra Singh Karki for economically weak students told the police that they had been abused by him several times in the past.

Officials are also exploring the possibility that the school children - many of whom come from nearby villages - may be involved in human trafficking.

The affair came to light when a few senior girls of the school secretly shot a video and sent it through a social networking App to Nainital SSP Vimmi Sachedva Raman. A police team that was constituted to investigate the matter met the minor girls in the school.

"The girls told investigators that Karki had abused them after calling them to his office," Raman told TOI.

Police officials said that one of the girls is a dalit and that Karki has been booked under the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences Act and the Prevention of Atrocities against SC/ST Act.

Sources said that Karki had tried to hush up the case and convince parents through some local NGO workers that they should not pursue the matter. "If found guilty, the NGO workers who have been named by parents of some of the victims will also be booked under IPC Section 201 for destruction of evidence," Raman said.

KCR should clarify on Dalit CM issue: MSP

Mahajana Socialist Party (MSP) leader Manda Krishna Madiga strongly objected to the statements made by TRS president KCR favouring closure of SC, ST and BC hostels to rebuild casteless society.

Describing it as a conspiracy, Mr Krishna Madiga said in the past too, similar attempt was made to close hostels of SC, ST and BCs in the name of containing the Naxalism in the State.

“The upper caste and feudal lords sense trouble for their political power from the downtrodden and wish to close the hostels that have been centres for Dalit empowerment and political awakening,” Mr Krishna Madiga opined.

He warned of serious agitation against any such move in the name of building a casteless society. Mr Rao should favour inter-caste marriages and he should begin that programme from his home rather than delivering sermons.

The TRS leader should first give clarity on his much talked promise of favouring a Dalit as first Chief Minister of new Telangana State. He made that promise with an intention to lure the downtrodden sections into the movement and after the State was formed, he stopped talking about that vow, the MSP leader added.

“He should come out clear on the issue of Dalit Chief Minister beforeMarch 25 else the MSP will chalk out an agitation programme at its proposed public meeting Mahajana Simha Garjana to be held in Warangal,” Mr Krishna Madiga said.

The SC,ST, BCs constitute majority of the population in Telangana State and if the feudalists try to capture the political power and marginalize the majority of people, another revolution would come to unseat them in a democratic way this time.

“In the past, the Dalits and other downtrodden youth were forced to take up guns to fight the oppression of feudalists in rural parts. Now, they are more awakened and high spirited. The Dalits know how to fight for their rights and extract their due share in political power,” Mr Krishna Madiga said.
