Dainik Nababarta Prasanga, a Bangla language daily from Assam, reported that Indian intelligence agency Research and Analysis Wing and Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence were engaged in a proxy war to demonstrate their power ahead of the election in Bangladesh. It said Delhi wants Sheikh Hasina back in power while Islamabad wants the BNP-Jamaat alliance to return.
Quoting RAW official in charge of Bangladesh Vivekananda Chattargee, the regional daily said that the Bangladesh election was as important to India as its own election due in 2014.
The Indian government approved a proposal to spend Rs 1,000 crore to bring Sheikh Hasina back to power, the daily said in the report published on October 21. The daily published the report under the headline, ‘Delhi to spend Rs 1,000 crore to bring Hasina back to power.’ Quoting sources in the Indian home ministry the report said that the Indian government had set aside Rs 800 crore to influence the last election in Bangladesh.
